photo scavenger hunt

This afternoon, while trying to think of something fun to do with Liam and Kai during Kingston and Evangeline's nap, I came up with a photo scavenger hunt. My original idea was to let the boys use our point and shoot cameras to take pictures of the things on the list. But I learned the hard way about not thinking this up in advance. One of our cameras was nowhere to be found. The other one had a dead battery and missing charger. This was after I had already explained my idea to these two excited boys and they were eagerly waiting to start.

I suggested waiting until a different day, Liam suggested using the DSLR. Liam's idea won. Kai got stuck with the low quality kids camera that also has little games on it. At this point, Kai gave up on the scavenger hunt and sat down to take pictures of himself and play games.

With Liam so eager to begin, I tried to explain to him about thinking through the composition of his pictures and what would help make them more visually appealing. For example, don't just take a picture of an empty sippy cup on the counter. I tried to gently direct him on what would or wouldn't be a good idea for a picture without actually suggesting anything specific. We have a lot to work on but it was fun to see his mind coming up with the photos he wanted to take. Here are a few from the hunt...

the list

and the handsome boy who snapped the rest of the photos

something red

something with numbers

something orange (we obviously didn't have many choices)

something you think is pretty

something that is your favorite color

a creative picture that you want to take (the signs say "YaY Liam")

Liam had a really good time coming up with all his pictures and I had a really good time watching him. He has requested doing another scavenger hunt soon. So hopefully we can pick a day that is not gloomy with the flash popping up for every picture.

We are also going to try to do a photo-a-day challenge in February with a couple of friends. I'm hoping that'll motivate me to take a few pictures and that I can teach Liam a few things in the process.

kids say

Is anyone else suffering from winter blues? I've been dreaming of going away for a nice, warm vacation with sunny skies and beaches.
Well that may not be a reality for me (or you) so hopefully some of these will at least put a smile on your face.

A conversation between Don and Kingston.
"Kingston, you're a mess."
"What?!"
"You're a mess."
"WHAT?!"
"You. Are. A. Mess."
"No, I'm not Miss. I'm Kingston."

Don was double checking to make sure he knew how to get to the Applebee's in Arnold when Liam spoke up and said "It's right next to Dirt Cheap, daddy!"
***this is funny because he has no idea what Dirt Cheap actually is. This kid just likes to read signs and that one just happens to stick out to him.
***it's also funny that my 6 year old was giving my husband directions.

The kids were watching our DVDs that teach sight words. When the word "but" came on the screen, liam explained to kai...
Liam--"Kai, that word does not mean the kind that's on your body.
Kai--"I know. It's the "but" that Pastor Scott always says."
(I guess that one might only make sense to Rockport people)

Liam--"Can you text Walmart and ask them if their bananas are yellow yet?"

Liam and kai were playing with Star Wars toys when I overheard part of the conversation that "the toys" we're having.
Kai's toy (Darth Vader)--"I'll be the dad!"
Liam's toy (Lando)--"You can't be the dad...you don't have a mustache!"

Liam--"Is a lemon a baby watermelon?"

I asked Liam and Kai which names they would pick for a baby boy/baby girl.
Liam's choices- boy, Desmond Legend. girl, Petunia Pink Princess
Kai choices- boy, Super Man. girl, Super Girl

I think we'll spend a little more time thinking through names )

Christmas cookies

After a pretty full holiday season, we can finally get back to our normal routine. School will start again on Monday. No more packed weeks with too many places to go.

We had a good Christmas season with lots to do. But I found myself not taking very many pictures. There has been a serious lack of motivation because my pictures have not been turning out how I would like them to.

It has seriously taken me weeks to post these pictures for that very reason. So my New Year's resolution (even though I don't do resolutions) will be to take more pictures. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway, this year we started a new tradition--making Christmas cookies. We've done this with other families in the past, but this year we tried it on our own. I will just say that it's time consuming and messy with 4 young children, especially when you're the only adult helping out (Don was sleeping.) But it was so worth it because of how much they enjoyed it. Here are just a few shots that I took over the TWO DAYS(!!) that it took to make them.

I wish everyone was in focus for these pictures...but these faces are priceless :)

the boys got to help out with the whole process

these little moments between brothers are the best!

Happy 2015!
