A Month in a Minute (January Edition)

Music is powerful. January has been a dreary, snowy, cooped up month. I was not looking forward to seeing how my "Month in a Minute" video would turn out this month. A lot of videos were taken during the times we were stuck in the house and driving each other insane. But once I put Don's music with the videos, it magically makes it look like we had a somewhat pleasant, fun month. And we did. But I'm telling you, we are ready for spring! I have 3 boys who are full of all times. We need some wide open spaces right about now.
Anyway, here's January's video--

Kids Say...

Kids say strange things. Some of the strangest things aren't documented because I forget to write them down.
But here are just a few random things they've said recently that I thought were cute.

Kai-How many carrots do you have to eat to be as strong as Jesus?
Me-You can never be as strong as Jesus, no matter how many carrots you eat.
Liam-Probably if you eat a trillion carrots, then you would be.

Me-Kai, who is your best friend?
Kai-mommy and daddy and Evangeline
Me-why are we your best friends?
Kai-cause daddy keeps liking you

Liam-if I wear my whitey tighties, I'll have Christmas underwear!!
Me-what makes them Christmas underwear?
Liam-they look like snow!

Talking about what 'sin' is
Kai-like if you hit a piggy and he falls down and gets dead
Liam-no, then you just eat it

Me-Liam and Kai, stop trying to act like you know more than mommy and daddy do. Who has lived longer?

I will do better about keeping track of things they say so I can remember their strangeness. I'm learning that Liam's mind is quite logical so he tends to be more sassy and literal. And I just never know what Kai will say. They crack me up!

Ice Festival

Those overnight shifts that Don has been working can be very tiring...especially after 3 1/2 years. So we decided it was time for a random weekend off.
On Friday night, the Lovings watched the kids and we went out on our first date out since September 2012! We hit up Ruby Tuesday for their delicious pretzel bun cheeseburgers. Then we went to (finally) see "Catching Fire." I'm a big fan of the Hunger Games series and this movie did not disappoint. It was so weird to be out together without kids, but so refreshing. Thank you, Lovings, for watching the kids! (Although I do believe they spent almost the entire time playing with the Gunby kids and their Little People toys.)
Saturday was the annual Ice Festival in Old St. Charles. I haven't been for a few years so I was eager to take the kids. Maggi and the Harrelsons also joined us for the day.

Old St. Charles is a cute town with lots of fun potential photo backdrops.

This one was a dragon

We were pretty cold with all the wind. (Which is why Liam is not pleased to take this picture) This was the Winter Olympics piece.

We went to the Foundry Art Center to warm up a bit before heading back out again.

This girl is just too cute when she's all snuggled up. She was such a great baby, bundled in her car seat and quietly enjoying the warmth.

We went back to the little old church where Stef and Tim got their "first look" and pictures on their wedding day.

Maggi took a few pictures of me and Don. Thanks Maggi! We don't get many pictures together anymore.

And of course, the traditional BFF pictures.

This vine wall was just too cool!

It was a cold, but wonderful day! I'm very thankful that Don was finally able to go with us somewhere before noon!!! That never, ever happens. And so happy to be able to spend some time with my best friends!
What a fun weekend!

Random bits of life

I just have a few random pictures to post. Recently, I've been really loving the look of black and white photos...especially since it tends to clean up (a tiny bit) the grainy, low lit pictures taken at night.

He can look so sweet and innocent sometimes :)

I love this squishy sleeping face.

And her long lashes..

Last week, Don's mom brought us the books he wrote when he was a kid. The boys loved them and wanted to make their own. So I had the boys tell me their stories while I wrote them down. We stapled some pages together and they illustrated their stories. It was a lot of fun to watch them come up with the plots. Kai's story was pretty funny!

Evangeline came to join us at the table

She also got to sit in the cart for the first time. This was the look she gave. I don't think she liked it too much.

Stephanie's baby shower was on Saturday. I can't wait to meet that precious baby boy! She is a beautiful mama! It's so encouraging to see how God has given her the grace she needs to make it through each day--as He does for me, too.

I saw a similar onesie at Babies R Us a couple months ago so I wanted to attempt a DIY. I think it'll look pretty cute on Paton! Now that I know what I'm doing, I hope to be able to make more for gifts.

I'm looking forward to this weekend. Don and I will be going on a date--for the first time in a year and a half! I can't wait!

My Little Doll

One of the best things about having a girl is dressing her. I love all the frilly, lacy, girly clothes. And the headbands, bows, flowers, scarves, leggings, boots (need I go on?) to accessorize. It's like having my own little doll to play with--but so much more fun!

Last year, while I was pregnant with Evangeline, I saw a baby dress at Target that I fell in love with. Problem was, it was $17.50 (on clearance!?!) I wouldn't even spend that much for a dress for myself, much less a baby who would outgrow it in 2-3 months!
So I waited and kept checking Goodwill, hoping to find it. Imagine my sheer excitement when I saw it hanging on the rack one day!! I immediately purchased it and have been dreaming of putting my baby girl in it ever since.

She got to wear it for the first time today. Let's just say, this dress did not disappoint. She looked absolutely precious in it! That called for a makeshift photo studio and lots of "mommy acting a fool" behind the camera.

I think she started to grow impatient with me while I tried to get a clear picture of her in her dress. Kai thought it looked like fun so he wanted to go next.

I was getting a lot of these kind of pictures.

Then I asked him to tell me about his favorite foods. So I got a more genuine smile from this food-loving boy.

Too bad he is just like his mommy and likes to change into his "jammies" as soon as we walk in the door.

I hope to get many more uses out of that adorable dress before she gets too big!

Puzzle Solved!

Today I randomly started thinking "I wonder when I posted my first blog post?" So I went back to the first post and discovered it was January 16, 2013. One year ago, as of yesterday. I'm so thankful that Maggi encouraged me to blog. It's been fun for me to be able to look back on what we have done over the past year. I never expected that I would be a "blogger," but it's been a great experience and I hope I am able to continue for years to come.

Anyway, last week I got some puzzles out for the boys. Liam has been a puzzle lover from a very young age, always loving the challenge of figuring them out. Then Kai came along. Let's just say that he hasn't always had the same appreciation for things that require thought and patience. But when I encouraged him to try a harder puzzle than he was used to, and he put it together all by himself, he was so proud! And I was proud of him. After that, he wanted to do it again, and again, and again. He's been having so much fun doing puzzles everyday now.

Liam's been perfecting his fake, ruin the pictures, kind of smile :)

We may have also borrowed a 500 piece puzzle from the Lovings. Perhaps I was overestimating their skills ;) But once I start a puzzle, I can't stop. So with a little bit of help from Don and the boys, I finished that one. I guess they get their puzzle loving from me.

And to close out this post, a super cute picture of Liam cuddling with his baby sister.

Today is a Day to Celebrate!

It's amazing to me that I can even type this--
10 years ago today I was finishing my last chemo treatment! I never expected to ever live a life past chemo. But here I am, 10 years later, with a wonderful husband and 4 amazing children. The Lord has blessed me.
I think that calls for some cinnamon roll cake for breakfast!

This is all the fake smile I could muster up next to my doctor, Dr. Chu.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22, 23 ESV)

Ever since Sunday, we've been snowed in our house. 'They' are calling it Snowmageddon. I'm not sure what the final measurements came to, but I'm pretty sure we got about a foot of snow. Normally, I'm not a big fan of big snow storms. This time, it hit at the perfect time. Don got home from work shortly after it started coming down hard. Since it was Sunday morning, that meant he didn't have to be back in to work until tonight (Tuesday night.) The boys were so excited when I told them that he was home and sleeping. They kept dancing and singing "Daddy made it home safely!" And Kai kept saying "Yay! Daddy did not get hurted!"

Don brought home some donuts from work. Liam wanted a donut snowman to celebrate the snow day.

When Kingston eats powdered donuts, it gets everywhere

After breakfast, the boys helped me clean up a bit. I had just bought them each their own brooms and dustpans. They were super excited to use them!

Here are a couple shots out the back door. This isn't the final result. But I guess I didn't take pictures of it.

This little girl is a doll, even with a slightly crusty face

We made some snow ice cream for a little snack. I actually never remember trying it before. But I was so pleasantly surprised when I realized it tasted exactly like an S&J's wedding cake snow cone (my favorite kind!) We had it two days in a row because I loved it so much.

We tried the frozen bubble trick that had been circulating the internet. Apparently, bubbles are supposed to "freeze instantly" in temperatures below freezing. Well, Monday was the coldest day in 20 years, (in the negatives) and I can tell you that they did not freeze instantly. It was tricky to even get a bubble to not pop or fly away. But I was determined! It may have turned out better if I had a fancy camera. But the iphone pictures will have to do.

Liam recently told me that his top 5 favorite things to do are hug me, kiss me, snuggle with me, massage my back, and massage my feet. This kid is a charmer.

He was making a heart with his hands

And just for fun, here are a few pictures of Evangeline. She tried a clementine for the first time today and she loved it! I can't stop taking pictures of her all the time.

It looks like more snow may be coming our way tomorrow night. So I think we'll stay in and stay warm for a few more days!
